SPRINT ANNOUNCES SIMPLIFIED RESIDENTIAL 800 SERVICE
SPRINT ANNOUNCES SIMPLIFIED RESIDENTIAL 800 SERVICE KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON)
today announced it is simplifying its popular Residential 800 service. Sprint has changed to a flat 25 cents per minute rate and reduced its monthly fee to $5.
In 1990, Sprint was the first long distance carrier to introduce a residential 800 service. Consumers signed up in record numbers for the convenient and cost-effective service. Sprint's Residential 800 service has been particularly attractive for parents of college students, who can provide their children with 800 calling numbers without providing open calling (to people other than the parents) via a calling card. Residential 800 service has also been popular with travelers, who like the convenience of keeping in touch with their "home" base by dialing only 11 numbers. Changes to Sprint's Residential 800 calling plan include: -- Reduced monthly fee from $15 to $5. -- Simple pricing structure of 25 cents per minute, anytime and from anywhere (except Canada where the price is 45 cents per minute). -- Elimination of installation fee. "Sprint revolutionized the industry as the first long distance company to introduce a residential 800 number," said Dave Schmieg, president of Sprint's Consumer Services Group. "Now Sprint makes it easier than ever for people with Residential 800 service to have their loved ones call their 800 number while they pay for the call." None of Sprint's competitors can match the range of features of Residential 800 service including: -- No installation charge. -- Calling from Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. -- No major competitor has lower rates than Sprint. -- Calling from any phone -- even rotary-dial ones. -- Ease of dialing with no Personal Information Number necessary. -- Customers do not have to be a Sprint long distance customer to use Sprint's Residential 800 service. Sprint's new Residential 800 service also offers simpler calling than the competition. For example, MCI's residential 800 number service requires 15 digits of dialing: 11 digits for a general 800 number plus a four-digit access code, which routes the call to a particular customer's phone. Many MCI customers share the same 800 number; Sprint provides customers with a unique 800 number shared by no one else. To order the Sprint Residential 800 service, customers can call Sprint's long distance product information representatives at 800-PIN-DROP (746-3767). Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.9 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states. -0- 9/21/92 /CONTACT: Robin Pence, 202-828-7454, or after hours, 703-820-1873, or Juanada Teas, 202-828-7426, or after hours, 703-644-5165, both of Sprint/ (FON) CO: Sprint ST: Missouri IN: TLS SU: PDT 463 09-21-92 13:35 EDT DC -- DC016 -- 1732 09/21/92 13:37 EDT
