SPRINT ANNOUNCES RAPID EXPANSION OF GLOBAL FRAME RELAY NETWORK IN EUROPE

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced the expansion of its global frame relay network to include Austria, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Sprint is now accepting customer orders for service between the new locations and the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. International frame relay service is offered at access speeds up to 256 kilobits per second, depending on local network facilities.
"With these new locations, Sprint continues the rapid expansion of its frame relay network to the world's key financial and commercial centers," said Rick Ciccone, vice president and general manager for Western Europe for Sprint International, Sprint's global telecommunications subsidiary.
Frame relay is a high-speed, bandwidth-on-demand service designed to provide cost-effective connectivity for geographically dispersed networks. It offers a common link for personal computer, local area network and system network architecture, or SNA, users.
In addition, the service offers users economical, high-capacity bandwidth when needed -- such as to transfer files between personal computers in disparate locations or to support worldwide financial and medical imaging applications.
Sprint -- unlike some other frame relay service providers -- offers a committed information rate, or CIR, which ensures a minimum sustained rate at which data flows through the network. The service permits sustained data "bursts" above a customer's requested CIR -- up to the full access channel capacity.
Sprint's CIR capability provides a cost-effective international frame relay service, since customers are charged a flat rate for the CIR that they select and not for excess bursts of traffic.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, local telephone services to nearly 6 million subscriber lines in 19 states, and cellular operations that serve 42 metropolitan markets and more than 50 rural service areas.
