SPRINT ANNOUNCES FIRST GOVERNMENT CONTRACT FOR SERVICES
 USING ELECTRONIC DATA INTERCHANGE
WASHINGTON, April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint's Electronic Data Interchange service -- SprintEDI -- now is being used by the General Services Administration's Federal Supply Service.
SprintEDI is Sprint's public service offering of EDI, a standards-based messaging technology which allows for long distance sharing of administrative documents directly from one computer application to another.
"This contract opens a wide marketplace for SprintEDI services," said Chris Rooney, president of Sprint's Government Systems Division. "Since the contract was awarded and services became available, nearly a half-dozen federal agencies have contacted Sprint and more than two dozen have contacted the GSA for SprintEDI product information," he said.
"Under the contract, Sprint will provide GSA and other federal government agencies with a full range of SprintEDI services, including interconnections to other EDI providers, EDI-to-fax and other delivery options," said Rob Weeks, program manager, Office of Federal Supply Services, Information Systems - GSA. "When combined with Sprint's FTS2000 electronic mail services, SprintEDI will give GSA extensive delivery capabilities, including transmission to any X.400 address," he said.
EDI systems, long used in procurement and distribution in transportation, grocery, automotive and other industries, enable industries to provide faster and more accurate transaction processing -- leading to service improvements, cost reductions and improved management information. Benefits generally accrue equally for both trading partners in proportion to the amount of goods traded.
"EDI is an enabling technology that is now being wholeheartedly embraced by the federal government," said Rooney. "EDI provides faster and less expensive transaction processing for both the government and its trading partners."
Sprint began offering Sprint EDI in 1988. In 1990, Sprint upgraded the service by moving to a Tandem computer platform, providing store-and-forward services on the same platform as Sprint's highly successful SprintMail services. Since winning this contract with the GSA, Sprint has expanded it SprintEDI focus to international markets through its public data network.
Sprint (NYSE: FON) is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
