SPRINT ANNOUNCES EXPANDED CELLULAR VPN SERVICE

SPRINT ANNOUNCES EXPANDED CELLULAR VPN SERVICE
ATLANTA, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today

announced it will be the first long distance company to offer seven- digit dialing for both switched and dedicated virtual private network (VPN) service to a broad base of cellular telephone customers.
This service will allow cellular users to use seven-digit dialing from cellular phones to domestic locations and, with Sprint's Global VPN service, to foreign countries. Callers to cellular subscribers on the network need only dial seven digits to reach them as well. The service, once reserved for dedicated VPN users, is being expanded to include switched VPN users also.
The VPN service also saves callers money through volume discounts based on total company usage. Sprint's cellular VPN does not require installation or activation fees required by other carriers' switched virtual private offerings. The feature allows VPN users with only a small number of cellular subscribers to take advantage of the cost efficiency of cellular VPN access.
Sprint will offer the switched service in the Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems service areas beginning Aug. 1, and plans to expand the service to the US West cellular markets later this year. Efforts are under way to expand this service to all seven Regional Bell Operating Companies by the end of 1992.
The announcement follows a successful two-month trial with SmithKline Beecham, a major pharmaceuticals and health care firm. The trial connected Sprint's Global VPN service with Bell Atlantic Mobile's Philadelphia market, allowing SmithKline executives to contact their counterparts in the United Kingdom while driving to work.
"This new cellular VPN service provides us with the best network solution at the most cost-effective price," said Sam Shiels, director of telecom services at SmithKline Beecham. "The firm expects to have several thousand cellular phones throughout the United States using the Sprint service to reach locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom."
"While Sprint has always allowed switched access to its VPN service from cellular phones, expanding this to offer seven-digit dialing is the result of our increased marketing focus on the wireless industry," said Kevin Brauer, vice president of sales for Sprint's Business Market Group. "Sprint is the first carrier to offer this service to a broad base of customers, which shows our commitment to new and innovative ways to use our network services. This service allows our customers to 'take their office with them' as they conduct business outside the traditional office setting."
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
