SPRINT ANNOUNCES COMPREHENSIVE NETWORK MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

SPRINT ANNOUNCES COMPREHENSIVE NETWORK MANAGEMENT STRATEGY
WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint today announced a comprehensive network management strategy at the ComNet exhibition here. The four elements of the strategy include:
-- Introduction of the Insite family of network management products.
-- Adoption of a platform architecture to monitor and control all Sprint-provided services, and a unified workstation.
-- Commitment to compliance with industry standards.
-- A plan to interface Sprint's platform architecture with other vendors' network management systems.
The implementation of Sprint's new strategy and the Insite product family begins with Insite Executive, the industry's only all- graphics-based network management system, and its first "service manager," 800 Call Director, both of which were also announced here today.
"Sprint's family of network management products will provide our customers with the comprehensive services they need," said Dave Dorman, president of Sprint's Major Accounts Group. "Today's announcements -- and others to follow -- are part of an integrated platform from which all Sprint-provided services can be monitored and controlled.
"Sprint's strategy offers a solution for our customers faced with multiple network management systems. Some customers have one system for each type of hardware and even different network management systems to manage different inter-exchange services even from the same carrier. Over the past 18 months, we've listened to our customers and have developed a strategy to meet their needs both now and through the decade."
"Sprint is committed to supporting a broad spectrum of cost- effective network management services via the Insite product family," said Gerry Euston, vice president of Business Product Marketing.
The second element of Sprint's network management strategy involves a platform architecture from which all Sprint-provided services can be monitored and controlled via a UNIX-based workstation.
"Unlike our competitors, whose various customer network management systems have evolved independently over time, Sprint's Insite Executive was designed from the ground up around a sophisticated infrastructure that makes this level of service integration possible for the first time," said Euston.
The new network management strategy also includes a commitment to compliance with emerging OSI standards, and to support of existing de facto standards such as the Simple Network Management Protocol or SNMP.
Different types of equipment typically found in customer networks require information exchange and necessitate sharing through the acceptance of industry standards. Although Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) standards are not yet fully defined, Insite Executive's architecture is built upon the OSI model and conforms to the latest OSI standards.
"The key to integrated network management in today's multi-vendor environment is a standards-compliant system such as Insite Executive," said Euston.
With that standards base, Sprint is positioned to follow through on the fourth phase of its network management strategy -- the commitment to interface Insite Executive with other vendor network management systems such as IBM's NetView.
The Insite product family also includes Insite PC, which has been enhanced to provide trouble management for Clearline private line services along with existing VPN, 800, FONCARD and WATS services, and Insite TP5000, a graphical workstation environment for control of data networks based on Sprint's own line of packet switches.
Sprint is a unit of United Telecommunications, Inc. (NYSE: UT), a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.7 billion in revenues. Sprint, with the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network, provides a comprehensive array of global voice, data and video communications products and services.
