SPRINT ANNOUNCES AN ALL-DIGITAL, FIBER-OPTIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS SERVICE FROM THE U.S. TO RUSSIA

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) announced today a fiber-optic, all-digital telecommunications service from the United States to Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.
The newest link between Sprint's U.S. customers and those in the Russian republic is a fiber cable between Denmark and Kingisepp, Russia. The cable interconnects over digital microwave to the newly inaugurated digital exchanges in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
With the cable, Sprint will have a five-fold increase in its network capacity into Russia to accommodate the country's growing demand for clear voice and data channels. The cable was installed by a consortium of telecommunications providers, of which Sprint is a member.
"Sprint, which built the first nationwide fiber-optic network in the United States in 1986, provides all-digital fiber-optic transmission capacity throughout Sprint's domestic network and to many points overseas," said Michael Robinson, assistant vice president of Sprint's Network Division. "This cable to Russia is another example of Sprint's international expansion with quality telecommunications services."
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network.
Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, local telephone services to nearly 5.9 million subscriber lines in 19 states, and cellular operations that serve 42 metropolitan markets and more than 50 rural service areas.
