SPRINT, MILITARY RADIO NETWORK CONNECTS TROOPS WITH HOME
 DURING THE HOLIDAYS
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 19, /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint will continue its holiday tradition of providing free calls to thousands of military pe?l over the Military Affiliates Radio System (MARS) for two weeks during the Christmas and New Year's holidays.
Sprint and MARS have worked together over the past eight years to provide free calling over U.S. Army, Air Force, and Navy/Marine MARS stations anywhere in the world back to the U.S. This past Thanksgiving, military personnel placed several thousand calls each day during a five-day calling period.
"We have supported this program for years because it allows military families to speak with their loved ones who can't be home for the holidays," said Chris Rooney, president of Sprint's Government Systems Division. "We are pleased to provide a way for our dedicated military personnel to share in the holiday season, even if they are thousands of miles from home."
Sprint will offer the free calling service from midnight EST, Dec. 23, to midnight PST, Jan. 3, from any MARS station in the world to the U.S.
The MARS program uses radio frequencies from ships and ground- based MARS facilities around the globe to reach MARS operators in the United States. These operators then patch the calls on the Sprint network to reach loved ones.
Sprint is a unit of United Telecommunications, Inc. (NYSE: UT), a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.7 billion in revenues. Sprint, with the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network, provides a comprehensive array of global voice, data and video communications products and services.
