SPRINT'S PHONE FRAUD PROTECTION PROGRAM EXTENDED TO SMALL BUSINESS AND 800 SERVICE

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced it is offering its SprintGUARD Plus phone fraud protection to small businesses and customers of its 800 service. Sprint also is increasing the financial protection available to all business customers.
With these changes, all Sprint business customers can purchase CPE fraud financial protection, which includes 365-day-a-year priority fraud monitoring and analysis. With the elimination of a minimum usage requirement, availability of a one-year service agreement and protection against losses of more than $10,000 per incident, small business customers can protect themselves against the potentially devastating effects of CPE phone fraud.
This $10,000 figure is the lowest CPE fraud financial protection threshold available in the telecommunications industry. "By doing away with any usage requirements, Sprint is able to help small businesses financially protect themselves against phone fraud to the same extent as large companies," said Robert F. Fox, Sprint assistant vice president of corporate security. "And our track record provides us with the confidence to demonstrate our leadership in this area by further reducing our customers' financial exposure."
Additionally, SprintGUARD Plus now will provide financial protection against CPE fraud involving inbound domestic 800 services and international inbound toll-free services. By protecting against this type of CPE fraud, Sprint further strengthens its line-up of 800 services and options.
"Since introducing SprintGUARD, Sprint customers have incurred less than one percent of the nearly $2 billion CPE fraud problem," said Gerry Euston, Sprint vice president of 800 marketing. "On the other hand, financial exposure from CPE fraud is a very real threat to users of our competitors' 800 and outbound services."
SprintGUARD Plus was introduced in March 1992, and is the premier offering in Sprint's fraud protection program.
Sprint has reduced the average loss for its business customers to $1,200 per incident, compared to the industry average CPE fraud loss of $60,000 per incident. Much of this success is due to Sprint's practice of monitoring and analyzing customers' inbound domestic 800 services, international inbound toll-free services and international outbound calls to all countries, and an ability to provide complete call detail reports to customers in minutes.
"Sprint monitors and analyzes calls to all international locations - - not just the select countries that are typically associated with CPE fraud calls," Fox said. "Phone fraud prevention and detection is a high priority within Sprint and it's a constant challenge, because we don't know what the next fraud will look like and to which country it will go."
CPE fraud occurs when PBXs, voice mail systems, auto attendants, and call diverters are compromised by hackers and used to make unauthorized

long distance calls -- usually to international and area code "809" locations.
Sprint also supports SprintNet (X.25 Public Data Network) and SprintLink (TCP/IP) customers, making Sprint one of the only communications providers to announce security support program for both voice and data network services.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, local telephone services to nearly 5.9 million subscriber lines in 19 states, and cellular operations that serve 42 metropolitan markets and more than 50 rural service areas.
