SPRINT'S MINORITY AND SMALL BUSINESS SUBCONTRACTING PROGRAM RECEIVES 'AWARD OF DISTINCTION'
SPRINT'S MINORITY AND SMALL BUSINESS SUBCONTRACTING PROGRAM RECEIVES 'AWARD OF DISTINCTION' KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint today received the U.S. Small Business Administration's "Award of Distinction" for its outstanding record in using minority, women-owned and small businesses as subcontractors under the company's FTS2000 contract. The Award of Distinction, which has been earned by less than two percent of the 1,700 largest prime contractors, was presented by Robert J. Moffitt, SBA associate administrator, procurement assistance, Washington. William T. Esrey, Sprint chairman and CEO, accepted the jade crystal statuette award during special ceremonies at Sprint headquarters. This is the third time the SBA has recognized Sprint for its efforts on behalf of minority and small businesses. In November, the SBA audited the company's minority and small business subcontracting program and gave Sprint its highest evaluation possible, saying the company's "outreach efforts are superior to any other prime contractor the team has reviewed." In 1991, the company was recognized for its efforts and received the SBA's Region VII Majority Private Sector Award. "Sprint has taken an aggressive leadership role in providing opportunities for minority and small businesses," said Moffitt. "This award is well-deserved and should serve as a standard for other companies to achieve." Representatives from the SBA were on hand for the award, along with area mayors; representatives from Congressional offices and local Chambers of Commerce; women-owned, minority and small contractors that do business with Sprint and local dignitaries. "We are absolutely committed to using small and disadvantaged businesses -- not just in the federal arena -- but in all our commercial operations as well," said Esrey. "Fully more than one- third of Sprint's FTS2000 subcontracts have gone to these businesses and the dollar amount could reach more than $43 million over the life of the ten-year contract." FTS2000 is the government's advanced cost-effective telecommunications network. Sprint was awarded 40 percent of this two-vendor contract in 1989. Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states. -0- 3/23/92 /CONTACT: Janis Langley, 202-828-7427 or, after hours, 703-533-3322, or John Landsberg, 913-624-3354 or, after hours, 913-345-1649, both of Sprint/ (FON) CO: U.S. Sprint ST: District of Columbia IN: TLS SU:
