 SPRINGS INDUSTRIES ANNOUNCES MAJOR EXPANSION
OF HOME FURNISHINGS BUSINESS IN CANADA
FORT MILL, S.C., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Crediting opportunity created by moves toward freer trade, Springs Industries (NYSE: SMI) today announced a major expansion of its home furnishings business in Canada through agreements with two leading Canadian companies.
Springs, a major U.S. producer of bed and bath products, has acquired the Texmade(R) and Wabasso(R) brand names along with the marketing and distribution operations of C.S. Brooks Canada Inc., that nation's largest producer of bed fashions. In connection with the agreement, Brooks will become a manufacturing contract supplier to Springs. Springs has created a new company, Springs Canada, Inc., to market its home fashions products in Canada as well as the U.S. The new company will employ the 41 people who formerly staffed Brooks' marketing and distribution units in Toronto and Montreal.
In a separate transaction, Springs has signed a letter of intent to purchase from Finlayson Enterprises, Ltd. of Toronto its Griffiths-Kerr division, longtime Canadian distributor of Springs' Springmaid(R) brand bed linens and related products.
No costs were disclosed. In 1991, Springs acquired the U.S. operations of C.S. Brooks Corporation, an affiliate of C.S. Brooks Canada Inc.
Walter Y. Elisha, chairman and chief executive officer of Springs, said, "These actions significantly enable us to better serve our Canadian home furnishings customers. The distribution we have enjoyed through Griffiths-Kerr, combined with opportunities presented by the Brooks brands and retail placements, promise growth that can be supplied from our U.S. manufacturing facilities as well as the C.S. Brooks Canadian manufacturing facilities. We will be able to offer our retail customers and Canadian consumers new levels of fashion, quality, variety and service.
"These transactions occurred in great measure because of a positive climate created by the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement. We believe these businesses will be further enhanced when the North American Free Trade Agreement becomes reality, creating an open market of 360 million people to be served by strong, competitive producers."
Springs Industries, based in Fort Mill, S.C., markets its sheets, comforters and other home fashions under such well-known brands as Springmaid(R), Wamsutta(R), Pacific(R), Performance(TM), Andre Richard(R) and Custom Designs(TM). Licensed names include Bill Blass(R) and Disney(R). With the Brooks agreement, Springs' brands now also include Texmade(R) and Wabasso(R).
