SPORTSFILE : Arthur will be crowned king of ring.
Byline: IAN HAMMILLBOXING legend Ken Buchanan is tipping protege Alex Arthur to follow his footsteps and scoop a world crown.
Buchanan was ringside at Glasgow's Braehead Arena last Saturday as Arthur beat Steve Conway to become the first Scot to win the British super featherweight championship.
And he was so impressed, he has invited Arthur as his VIP guest at next June's American Hall of Fame dinner in New York. Former world lightweight champ Buchanan said: "I've told Alex it's a reward for the impressive way he stopped Conway in four rounds.
"Nobody should be surprised though.
"I regard Alex as my natural successor as Edinburgh and Scotland's next world boxing champion.
"The kid is terrific. He oozes class and confidence and I've no doubt he will follow in my footsteps."
Arthur was thrilled and said: "Going to New York with my idol will be brilliant.
"Kenny is my inspiration and I mean to fulfil his faith in me."
Meanwhile, Buchanan revealed he has applied for the vacant post of coach with Amateur Boxing Scotland.
He said: "I'm as well qualified as anyone else to do the job."
DARIO FRANCHITTI had to settle for eighth spot on the grid going into today's CART FedEx series Honda Indy 300 at Surfers Paradise in Australia.
The Edinburgh driver, in his Honda, is racing only for the minor places as Brazilian Cristiano da Matta clinched the title three weeks ago.
Dario's brother, Marino, will start the final round of the Speed World Challenge GT Championship at Virginia from third.
DREW HENRY beat fellow Scot Martin Dziewialtowski 5-1 in the fourth qualifying round for the B&H Championship and Billy Snaddon saw off Lee Richardson 5-4.
TEN-TIME darts world champion Phil Taylor and John Part dropped just one set between them as they eased into the final of the Paddy Power World Grand Prix in Dublin. Taylor overcame Peter Evison 6-0 while Part conceded just one set on his way victory over Andy Jenkins.
JACKIE LOCKHART'S World Championship curling winners from Aberdeen struggled to find form as they got their domestic season underway at the Lockerbie Tournament in Dumfriesshire yesterday.
They lost 7-6 to Anne Anderson before Edith Loudon took revenge for her narrow Scottish Championship semi- final defeat by winning 10-4.
