SPORTS MEDIA BRINGING PRO TEAM YEARBOOKS DISTRIBUTION TO RETAIL OUTLETS NATIONWIDE; AGREEMENTS WITH FOUR CHAINS TOTALING MORE THAN 400 STORES

NEW YORK, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time consumers will be able to purchase the official yearbooks of their favorite professional sports teams at retail locations across the country. Jeffrey S. Butler, chairman and CEO of Sports Media (NASDAQ: SPTS), the nation's leading publisher of yearbooks for teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB), announced today that Sports Media has reached distribution agreements with four leading retail sports chains with a total of more than 400 retail locations nationwide.
Sports Media, which began testing sales of the yearbooks at Herman's World of Sporting Goods stores in December 1992, will now have its titles available in three others, Oshman's, Dunham's and Sports Mart, as well. Most official 1993 NFL yearbooks have a cover price of $6.95, and go on sale this month at the four chains.
Herman's currently has 124 stores concentrated in New York, Pennsylvania and the Northeast, and is scheduled to open 15 more in 1994. Oshmans has 185 retail locations in 15 states including Texas, California and Florida. Dunham's has 70 stores in eight states, with a heavy concentration in the midwest -- Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Sports Mart has 25 stores in three states with its heaviest concentration in the Chicago area.
"The initial four chains guarantee nationwide distribution for our NFL titles. This marks the first time that professional teambooks will be available outside arenas and stadiums in mass distribution," said Mr. Butler. "We know from sales in the 28 New York stores that sports fans want to be able to purchase yearbooks other than their home teams'."
Sports Media's Lucite carousel display units will carry the company's titles exclusively. Each unit carries 40 individual titles and a composite of 200 sports team yearbooks. Mr. Butler said Sports Media's goal is to expand distribution to other retail locations by Thanksgiving.
The initial roster of NFL yearbooks include the Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Houston Oilers, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Phoenix Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Redskins.
Yearbooks for most NBA teams will go on sale in November. Mr. Butler said negotiations for additional sports book titles, and with other retail chains are ongoing.
