SPORTS ILLUSTRATED'S ALL-STAR SPORTS FESTIVAL KICKS OFF
 AT SIX FLAGS GREAT ADVENTURE
JACKSON, N.J., April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Thousands of children, adults, and would-be sports superstars came out today to shoot baskets with "Dr. J," catch passes from Randall Cunningham, and kick soccer balls against world-class goalie Tony Meola during the official kick-off of the Sports Illustrated All-Star Sports Festival here at Six Flags Great Adventure.
Open daily through Sunday, April 26 (to coincide with most public schools' spring breaks), the first day of the 10-day festival attracted numerous other sports superstars, including Leonard Marshall of the New York Giants; Peter Fleming, former United States Tennis star; and Abuto King Nyanjong, the world record holder for juggling and heading a soccer ball -- 16 hours, 27 minutes, and five hours, 30 minutes, respectively.
Organizers and participants include Time Warner Enterprises, Six Flags Great Adventure, the NFL, the NBA, New York Mets Baseball, Pro Golf Association Tour, World Cup '94, the United States Tennis Association, and members from Team USA who participated in the recent Winter Olympics.
"The Sports Illustrated All-Star Sports Festival is definitely one- of-a-kind," said Ray Williams, president of Six Flags Great Adventure. "Not only does it represent the first time that the major professional sports leagues have joined together for a single event, but it allows for the average person to get a feel for what it's like to compete and perform on the professional level. It's one thing to watch professional athletes perform, and another story all together to try and emulate what they are actually accomplishing."
Additional sports superstars who are scheduled to visit the Sports Illustrated All-Star Sports Festival include: Earl Monroe, former New York Knicks star, and Harry Carson, former New York Giants All-Pro linebacker, on Saturday, April 18; Bob Lanier, former Detroit Piston and NBA All-Star, on Monday, April 22; and Sean Landetta, New York Giants punter, on Saturday, April 25.
 Participation is Main Focus
Among the many highlights of the festival are dozens of attractions designed to involve Guests in sporting activities, from using roller blades to hitting golf balls.
Major highlights include elements from the NFL's popular "NFL Experience," a 60-foot long interactive football museum that allows participants to throw passes at simulated target receivers, kick field goals through an official upright, or try on "player sized" equipment, such as lineman helmets and William "Refrigerator" Perry's Super Bowl ring.
For baseball fans, an official New York Mets pitching machine challenges the best of sluggers and a pitch speed radar analyzes Guests' performance in throwing fast balls. Additional attractions include basketball courts, where participants shoot baskets under the pressure of an official NBA shot clock, or, through the use of advanced video production techniques, slam the winning dunk in an NBA All-Star game.
Other areas of the festival include golf, complete with putting green and chipping and driving areas; tennis, including four half-courts with radar capability for tracking service speeds; and soccer, offering an official goal with penalty shot line.
The USA Olympic Luge Team is also on-hand to provide demonstrations and to conduct actual Junior Olympic Team tryouts using a training simulator called a "Road Luge."
Six Flags Great Adventure features more than 550 acres of rides, shows, and attractions, including the world's largest drive-through Safari. In addition to the new Sports Illustrated All-Star Sports Festival attraction, Guests will have the opportunity to ride The Great American Scream Machine, one of the world's tallest, fastest, looping roller coasters that's located in the Boardwalk area; or experience Adventure Rivers, a 15-acre themed area of thrilling water raft rides.
