SPORT SHORTS: SPEEDWAY - Trophy weekend.

TEAM speedway took a break in the North East at the weekend with Berwick and Newcastle running individual trophies.

At Berwick on Saturday night, Elite League racer with the Ipswich Witches, Australian Rory Schlein, took gold in the Bordernapolis with a perfect unbeaten performance, winning the final over Tomasz Piszcz, of Birmingham, in a cracking four laps. Third was Berwick's Michal Makovsky and Glasgow's Trent Leverington was fourth.

At the Newcastle Stadium on Sunday the Sapphire Engineering Precision Trophy was taken by Newcastle's Josef Franc who scored 12 points in his five heats. Second on 11 was Christian Henry, also of the Diamonds with third going to Newcastle's new Danish star, Kenni Larsen.
