SPORT SHORTS: CYCLING - Cooke's world title.

BEIJING Olympic gold medallist Nicole Cooke won cycling's world road race title in Varese on Saturday afternoon to complete an amazing year for the Welsh woman.

The 25-year-old from Wick outsprinted Marianne Vos of Holland and Judith Arndt of Germany - champions in 2006 and 2004 - to win the first senior World Championship medal of her career and confirm she is the best woman cyclist on the planet.

Three times a previous podium finisher at the worlds, Cooke rode a perfect race on the hilly circuit around Varese, north of Milan and then pulled out a powerful sprint to take an historic Olympic and world championship double.
