 SPIEGEL TO BUILD NEW DISTRIBUTION FACILITY;
 FOUR SITES UNDER CONSIDERATION
 DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Spiegel, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: SPGLA) today announced that it is moving ahead with plans to construct a new distribution facility to replace its current building complex on 35th and 39th Streets in Chicago. Company officials indicated that a new facility will allow for anticipated growth and increased efficiencies.
 The company intends to break ground for a new building early in November 1992 at one of four sites still under evaluation. Three of the four sites are located in the state of Illinois. A fourth is located in the Columbus, Ohio, area.
 The Illinois sites under consideration are in Champaign, Decatur and Plainfield. They were selected from a list of 38 independent engineering, construction and geology experts have been evaluating the potential sites against a number of specific criteria. A more detailed evaluation of the remaining sites is currently underway and the company expects to make a final decision by late September.
 According to Spiegel Vice President and General Counsel Michael R. Moran, 35 Illinois sites -- including six in the city of Chicago -- were eliminated because they failed to meet essential criteria, such as size (too little acreage), property configuration, infrastructure deficiencies (transportation, utilities access) and lack of timely availability for acquisition and/or construction.
 Spiegel has notified its employees that the distribution operations will move when the new building is completed in 1994. The company intends to work with government officials to find a productive use for the current sites once they are vacated.
 The Chicago distribution facilities currently employ an average of 2,000 full- and part-time employees. Spiegel's corporate headquarters will not be affected and will remain in Downers Grove. Existing facilities in Bensenville, Oak Brook and Westmont, as well as its outlet stores in the Chicagoland area, will not be affected.
 Spiegel, Inc. is the dominant multichannel specialty retailer marketing fashionable apparel and home furnishings to discerning customers through catalogs and more than 250 specialty retail stores. Spiegel's businesses include Eddie Bauer, Crayola Kids and For You from Spiegel. Spiegel's Class A non-voting common stock trades on the NASDAQ National Market System under the ticker symbol SPGLA.
