SPIEGEL, INC. REPORTS 24 PERCENT GAIN IN FOURTH QUARTER SALES

 DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Spiegel, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPGLA) today reported preliminary net sales for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992, were $812.3 million, an increase of 24 percent from the $652.9 million in the same period last year. The company also reported that sales for the year-ended Dec. 31, 1992, were $1.970 billion, an increase of 14 percent from the $1.734 billion reported last year.
 Strong sales gains were posted at both the catalog and retail store divisions. Eddie Bauer comparable store sales were ahead 26 percent for the quarter and 17 percent for the year. The company attributed the comparable store sales gains in part to the new store prototype program initiated in the Fall of 1992, which will continue into 1993.
 John J. Shea, Spiegel vice chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "This upward trend in sales began in late spring, and we are pleased to see that it strengthened during the Christmas shopping season. Our emphasis on value pricing continues to bolster sales, while both Spiegel and Eddie Bauer catalog divisions achieved record results in new customer acquisitions."
