SPIDER-MAN WEBS HIS WAY TO JAPAN FOR LAUNCH OF MARVEL'S STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH SHO PRO

 NEW YORK, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Spider-Man, the ever wondrous but always worried Marvel Comics web slinger, is about to go where no other American Super Hero has gone before.
 Joined by his legendary creator Stan Lee, Spidey is heading for Tokyo for the formal introduction of the Marvel Universe -- a stable of more than 2,500 of the world's most celebrated comic book characters -- to more than 400 members of the Asian business community. The presentation at Space Zero on Jan. 25, 1993, at 1:30 p.m., marks the launch of a new strategic alliance between the Marvel Entertainment Group, Inc. and Shogakukan Production Co., Ltd. (Sho Pro) to exploit the Marvel properties for publishing and merchandising in Japan.
 "We are very excited about our new relationship with Sho Pro, and we feel that it virtually ensures the successful exploitation of our characters in Japan which is the world's largest comic book market," stated Terry Stewart, president, Marvel Entertainment Group, Inc., who is also Tokyo-bound. "Given that the Japanese enjoy action/adventure material and that virtually everyone there -- regardless of age -- reads comic books, it seems like a natural marketplace for our characters in terms of both publishing and merchandising. To date, there are no American comic books published in Japan, and we're confident that Sho Pro will soon make Marvel as prominent in Japan as we already are in so many markets around the world."
 Sho Pro is the licensing and merchandising subsidiary of Shogakukan Co., Ltd., Japan's largest publishing conglomerate whose properties include industry leaders such as Doraemon, Dragon Ball and Shonen Jump.
 Marvel Entertainment Group, Inc. (NYSE: MRV), is the largest publisher of comic books in North America and a leading marketer of trading cards through its Fleer subsidiary. In addition to Spider-Man (who is slated to star in a major motion picture written, directed and produced by "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" filmmaker James Cameron), Marvel owns a coterie of characters including The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and the X-Men that are licensed to publishers and merchandise manufacturers around the world.
