SPICE STREET; Girls shut road for video shoot.

THE Spice Girls spiced up the lives of Dubliners yesterday by rolling up for a surprise video shoot.

The Fab Five swooped on picturesque Carnew Street to film their next record Stop Right Now.

The place was abuzz, with some excited youngsters even bunking off school to watch Sporty, Baby, Scary, Ginger and Posh strutting their stuff.

David Shanahan, 16, said: "I couldn't believe it. I opened my front door this morning and there was Baby Spice."

A fire engine had hosed down Carnew Street, in the Stoneybatter area of the city, to create a wet look and a huge lighting system with silver reflectors lit up the area.

Householders in the street - a double for TV's Coronation Street - were given pounds 100 each for sealing off their road.

But they would have been happy enough just to play host to the Fun Girl Five.

In between takes the girls charmed locals. And while they shivered in miniskirts and hotpants the superstars showed their warm nature.

Private Gerry Allen, on sentry duty at nearby St Bricin's Military Hospital, said: "Sporty Spice came to chat and promised to bring me a bowl of soup later.

"My son Keith won't believe me. He's mad on them."

Fan John Boylan, 16, said: "They were really nice." His pal Natalie Hutch, 15, added: "Emma was lovely."

Schoolgirl Jenna Murphy said: "I was nearly crying at seeing them. It is the best day of my life."

Bubbly Geri gave pals David Shanahan and Paul Keenan, 15, a big hug and signed autographs.

Paul said: "Geri was really nice, she was sound."

The girls are believed to be off to a new secret location today to film another video.

They are set to start rehearsals in the Point Theatre this weekend for their forthcoming world tour.

And two dates in the Point Theatre next month are expected to be announced shortly

There is also speculation that the girls will perform at the Childline charity concert in the same venue on February 21
