SPENCER HAYWOOD BEGINS AGAIN WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

DETROIT, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Spencer Haywood Foundation begins a weeklong "Choices" drug and alcohol prevention program in the Detroit Public Schools. The first large-scale "Choices" event will take place in the Detroit schools. Haywood will stand before thousands of Detroit Public Schools children in a weeklong program sponsored by Alexander Hamilton Life. The program will begin April 19 at Pershing High School, the place where Mississippi farm boy Haywood began his illustrious basketball career at the hands of Will Robinson, then Pershing coach, now Pistons vice president.
The primary business of the foundation is drug and alcohol prevention and rehabilitation programs, supported by Haywood's own story told in his video "Choice of a Lifetime," and his current best-selling biography, "The Rise, The Fall, The Recovery of Spencer Haywood." The book is being negotiated as a made-for-TV movie.
The foundation has many programs for helping the addicted: the video is a mainstay for public activities, including basketball camps and school rallies; a "Choices" comic book series targeting young addictive personalities; and a radio show on WDTR 90.0 FM and WJLB 1200 AM. The foundation also co-produced a comprehensive computer training program for prison inmates and rehabilitating addicts.
In the foundation's future is a "Choices" television program, nationally syndicated radio show, and a "Haywood House" for recovering, productive addicts.
The weeklong event will travel to eight Detroit schools and one Redford Township school.
Haywood has dedicated "Choices" week in the Detroit schools to "all our children endangered by the world of drug and alcohol abuse."
