SPEEDSTREAM 4000 UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS DSL MODEMS UNVEILED.

To address the burgeoning demand for high-speed remote network access among consumers, telecommuters and small businesses, Efficient Networks, Inc., Dallas, Texas, has introduced a new family of Universal Serial Bus (USB) Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) designed for instant installation. Called the SpeedStream 4000 series, the new family of ATM/DSL external modems can quickly and easily connect to Windows PCs over the standard interface for external communication peripherals, Universal Serial Bus.

The first product to be introduced in Efficient's new family of USB DSL modems is the SpeedStream 4020, a Plug and Play (tm) compatible modem which connects to a PC or laptop through a USB port, and to the DSL service provider through a standard ADSL port. The SpeedStream 4020, which offers seamless interoperability with a number of industry's leading Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) and Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) equipment vendors, features integrated DSP technology that enables the product to be field upgradeable to the forthcoming splitterless G.lite specification through a simple software download.

"The SpeedStream 4000 series modems complement Efficient Networks' existing 3000 and 5000 series DSL modems, and are ideally suited for applications where high-speed access, convenience and ease-of-installation are priorities," said Greg Langdon, vice president of marketing at Efficient Networks. "The SpeedStream 4020 USB ADSL modem addresses the non-technical consumer and business customers who want multi-megabit access to the Internet quickly and easily."

Instant Setup

The SpeedStream 4020 modem easily installs using Efficient's configuration and management software. The wizard-driven GUI allows end-users to easily install, configure and monitor the modem's operation without technical support. Setup is as simple as plugging the modem into the USB port on the PC, inserting a diskette with a and clicking a mouse to install a pre-configured, service profile software module.

The SpeedStream 4020 sends and receives ATM cells over copper phone lines using standards-based Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) ADSL transmission, and integrates the Analog Devices/Aware DMT ADSL chipset as its core signal processing engine. The SpeedStream 4020 offers data rates of up to 8 Mbps downstream and 800 Kbps upstream, though actual throughput depends on the length and wire gauge of the local phone line. The new SpeedStream 4020 supports Windows 98 users.

With the SpeedStream 4020, data from the PC is transmitted and received using the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) which is the standard transmission protocol used by DSL access networks worldwide. Conversion of the PPP packets into ATM cells for transmission over the DSL link is performed by software on the PC, and hardware and software in the modem. In addition to PPP over ATM support, the SpeedStream 4020 also supports Ethernet over ATM and IP over ATM.

Pre-Config Tools Aid Service Providers

The SpeedStream 4000 series is also supported by Efficient Networks' ProfileBuilder(tm) application which enables service providers to develop pre-configured CPE settings for rapid installation. ProfileBuilder provides service providers with a set of intuitive, easy-to-use graphical interfaces for the creation of standard service profiles to be bundled with the SpeedStream 4000 series modems. By using service profiles, no configuration is required during installation. Setup is as simple as plugging a modem into the USB port on the PC, inserting a diskette with a configuration file, and clicking a mouse to install a pre-configured, service profile software module.

Distribution, Pricing & Availability

Efficient Networks' SpeedStream 4020 USB ATM over DMT ADSL modem has a suggested retail price of $299 with trial units available in Q4 1998 and general availability scheduled for December 1998. The product will be available through service providers, direct from Efficient Networks, and through specialized systems integrators.
