SPECTRUM INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES INC. FILES SUIT AGAINST MICROCOM, INC. FOR PATENT INFRINGEMENT; WARNING SOUNDED TO ALL WHO MAY TRESPASS

MANHASSET, N.Y., Nov. 18 ~PRNewswire~ -- Spectrum Information Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: SPCL) today released the following:
Spectrum pioneered the basic technology required to allow reliable data transmission over cellular radio telephones and has recently embarked on an aggressive licensing program designed to ensure that its patent rights are respected by those rushing to enter the explosively expanding field of cellular data transmission.
Having just completed successful license negotiations with Data Race, Inc., Spectrum Information Technologies Inc. (revenues approximately $100 million), has filed suit against Microcom, Inc., claiming willful and wanton patent infringement based on Spectrum's recently reissued cellular modem~SPCL protocol patent (Reissue No. 34,034).
According to Peter Caserta, Spectrum's CEO, "The U.S. Patent Office has destroyed Microcom's basis for refusing to recognize Spectrum's basic SPCL patent rights. All of Microcom's evidence and arguments were found groundless by the Patent Office after thorough consideration. The reissuance of our basic patent is further recognition of the fact that Spectrum pioneered the cellular data transmission industry."
Mr. Caserta also stated that Spectrum remained hopeful that Microcom would reverse its position and respect Spectrum's patent rights. "Make no mistake about it," Mr. Caserta said, "Spectrum intends to enforce these patent rights and not deprive ourselves of revenues estimated to be in the billion dollar plus area."
Mr. Caserta is also chairman of the Caserta Group, an investment banking firm based in Manhasset.
Spectrum is a leader in developing, marketing and supporting integrated wireless data communications systems using patented technology and proprietary methods to enhance productivity and effectiveness among mobile executive and field forces.
