SPECTRUM INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES, INC. RESPONDS TO AN ERRONEOUS NEWS REPORT RELATING TO ITS PATENTS

MANHASSET, N.Y., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Spectrum Information Technologies, Inc., ("Spectrum") (NASDAQ-NMS: SPCL), today responded to a news report issued last Friday which stated that AT&T was not using Spectrum's patented cellular data transmission technology. The report also implied that AT&T had invented methods to avoid using Spectrum's patents. These statements reflect both a misunderstanding of AT&T's modem operations and a misunderstanding of Spectrum's patents.
Claiming that AT&T is not using Spectrum's technology is contrary to numerous written statements made by AT&T itself. In a press release dated May 18, 1993, AT&T announced that it was introducing a new high speed chipset and indicated that it uses Spectrum's patents under the new license agreement between the two companies. Advertising brochures being used by EO and NCR, affiliates of AT&T, at the present time are announcing that the products use Spectrum's technology to connect cellular telephones.
The second misunderstanding relates to claims that AT&T has designed ways to avoid using Spectrum's patents. This misunderstanding appears to be based on some new direct connect system which allow laptops to connect to cellular phones without using Spectrum's AXSYS and AXCELL cables. The problem with this claim, even if it were true, is that it does not recognize that the license agreement covers "direct connect" systems as well. It is hard to understand why AT&T would have bothered entering into a license agreement with Spectrum if at the same time it had a means of avoiding Spectrum's patents.
Spectrum Information Technologies, Inc. is headquartered in Manhasset, with facilities nationwide. Spectrum develops and licenses wireless data transmission technologies through its subsidiary Spectrum Cellular Corporation. The company designs, markets and services portable communications and computing systems as a systems integrator through its subsidiary Data One. Spectrum is a distributor of portable computers through its subsidiary Computer Bay, which has the resources of 270 franchise locations.
