SPECTRUM HOLOBYTE ACQUIRES BULLET-PROOF SOFTWARE USA; 'YOSHI'S COOKIE' EXPECTED LATE MAY FOR SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

ALAMEDA, Calif., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Spectrum HoloByte Inc., a leading marketer of interactive computer entertainment, today announced its acquisition of video game publisher Bullet-Proof Software USA. Bullet-Proof Software is best known for bringing Tetris(TM) to the Nintendo platforms; Tetris is recognized worldwide as one of the best- selling products of all time. Other popular Bullet-Proof Software products include its award-winning title FaceBall 2000(R) and the upcoming Yoshi's Cookie(TM), starring the famous Super Mario World(TM) characters Mario and his dinosaur buddy Yoshi. Release for Yoshi's Cookie is planned for late May for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Bullet-Proof Software, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Spectrum HoloByte, will maintain its present operations in Redmond, Wash. Financial details of the acquisition are not available.
"Bullet-Proof Software has a proven ability to deliver successful Nintendo titles," said Spectrum HoloByte Chief Executive Officer Patrick S. Feely. "The company is highly regarded in this industry and we look forward to adding its products and operations to our already powerful line-up."
According to Feely, the newly formed link with Bullet-Proof Software Japan, Bullet-Proof Software's former parent company, strengthens Spectrum HoloByte's long-term product-acquisition goals for the U.S. market.
"This is a big step in the right direction for both companies and a big step for the future of entertainment," said Henk Rogers, chairman of Bullet-Proof Software. "Spectrum HoloByte and Bullet-Proof have always shared resources. It's a pleasure to finally be on the same team."
Bullet-Proof Software Japan, one of that country's leading game publishers, was established in 1982 by Henk Rogers after he wrote a game entitled Black Onyx. Black Onyx became a smash hit in Japan, garnering numerous game-of-the-year awards. Since then, Bullet-Proof Software has successfully imported several U.S. and European games into Japan. In 1989, Bullet-Proof Software secured the hand-held game system rights to Tetris, the worldwide sensation created in the former Soviet Union by Alexey Pajitnov. Bullet-Proof Software Inc. was founded in October 1989 as a subsidiary of Bullet-Proof Software Japan.
As developer and manufacturer of interactive computer simulation and video-games software since 1986, Spectrum HoloByte is best known for its personal-computer products Falcon(R), the ultra-realistic F-16 flight simulation, and Tetris, the famous game of falling blocks. State-of- the-art graphics and sound complement an unmatched depth of play in the dozens of products Spectrum HoloByte has published.
In 1991 the company entered into an agreement with Paramount Pictures which provides Spectrum HoloByte the exclusive license to produce computer and video games using the name and characters from the hit television series Star Trek: The Next Generation(R). The Super Nintendo and IBM-compatible versions are scheduled for a fourth-quarter 1993 release. Spectrum HoloByte is also working with Edison Brothers of St. Louis to develop software for location-based virtual-reality technology.
Spectrum HoloByte is a privately held corporation. Patrick S. Feely is chief executive officer, Barry James Folsom is president and Gilman G. Louie is founder and chairman.
