SPECTRUM GRANTED PATENT RIGHTS FOR STATE-OF-THE-ART CELLULAR MODEM INTERFACE TECHNOLOGY

MANHASSET, N.Y., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Spectrum Information Technologies, Inc. ("Spectrum") Manhasset, N.Y. (NASDAQ-NMS: SPCL), today announced the U.S. Patent Office has scheduled expedited issuance to Spectrum of a patent granting Spectrum exclusive rights in technology relating to directly connecting computer modems to cellular telephones.
The patent has been allowed by examining authorities, and because of its importance in the industry, it is scheduled for expedited issuance within the next few weeks. The patent will cover technology that allows a modem to control the operation of a cellular telephone with software through a simple wire connection, eliminating intermediate interface boxes.
"Spectrum is pleased at this recognition of the company's technological leadership in the cellular data communications field," said Spectrum. "We believe the new patent will provide significant rights in these state-of-the-art, streamlined connections and will launch the cornerstone for Spectrum's worldwide patent exclusivity for this technology."
The licensing agreements with AT&T, Megahertz and Apex Data for Spectrum's patented cellular data communications technology include rights to Spectrum's most advanced interface technology covered by the new patent.
"The new patent will enhance Spectrum's licensing revenues as the market moves to these more advanced products," Spectrum said. "The patent is also a big plus for Spectrum's licensees, since it will keep unlicensed industry participants from unfairly competing by using Spectrum's patented technology."
