SPECTRUM'S PATENT HOLDINGS SWELL DURING 1992 TO THE EQUIVALENT OF OVER 200 PATENTS FOR DATA ON CELLULAR

DALLAS, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- During 1992, the patent holdings of Spectrum Information Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: SPCL) have swelled to the equivalent of over 200 patents. On June 30, Spectrum was granted U.S. Patent No. 5,127,041 including a vast array of claims varying in scope and directed to Spectrum's AXSYS(R) interface system, AXSYS(R) modem, and AXSYS(R) interface cable. This new patent was followed quickly by the reissuance of Spectrum's SPCL(TM) protocol Patent No. 34,034 including a variety of claims directed to the important features of Spectrum's SPCL(TM) for ensuring error free data transmission over cellular telephones.
With the issuance of the AXSYS(R) patent and the SPCL(TM) protocol reissue patent, Spectrum now holds over 200 patent claims. Spectrum's patent rights include the claims of five previously issued patents under which Spectrum is licensed and include the claims of Spectrum's issued foreign patents. According to one of the leading experts on patent law, Donald S. Chisum, professor of law at the University of Washington, the Federal Courts have ruled that each claim of a patent is like a separate patent. Prof. Chisum specifically cites the Supreme Court ruling "Leeds & Catlin Co. v. Victor Talking Mach. Co." in support of the assertion.
With the equivalent of over 200 patents in its quiver, and more applications pending, Spectrum is shooting for major success in its licensing program during 1993.
