SPECTRAN TO INTRODUCE SINGLE MODE OPTICAL FIBER

STURBRIDGE, Mass., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- SpecTran Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: SPTR), which develops, manufactures and markets glass optical fibers, today announced that it will introduce single mode optical fiber in the fourth quarter of 1993.
"The company has completed the technical development of its new single mode fiber designed to meet current industry performance standards," Dr. Raymond E. Jaeger, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said. In recent years, SpecTran has concentrated on manufacturing multimode fiber which is used primarily for data communications. "An increasing number of data communications applications span longer distances and require the increased optical performance single mode fibers provide. As a result, it is strategically important for SpecTran to begin supplying this type of fiber to our existing customer base," Jaeger added.
"While we expect the market for multimode fiber to continue experiencing long-term attractive growth rates, we also believe that single mode fiber will find increasing usage in data communications installations," he continued.
The single mode fiber SpecTran will produce is not subject to the patent license agreement the company has with Corning, Inc. Therefore, this product will not be subject to the limitations in that license.
"While SpecTran will continue to remain focused primarily on the U.S. data communication market, the introduction of single mode fiber will provide the company an opportunity to participate in other markets for this product both here and abroad," according to Dr. Jaeger. "The addition of single mode fiber to our product line will afford us greater flexibility in determining future market strategies."
In addition to meeting industry standards for data communications set by the Telecommunications Industry Association, SpecTran's new single mode fiber will also meet current standards set for the telecommunications industry by Bellcore and international communications standards recommended by the International Telecommunications Union.
