SPECTER SUPPORTS SPEEDY FEDERAL APPROVAL OF PITTSBURGH POST GAZETTE'S EFFORTS TO PURCHASE PITTSBURGH PRESS' ASSETS SO IT CAN RESUME PUBLISHING

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 ~PRNewswire~ -- U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) announced today that he is hopeful that the U.S. Department of Justice will give speedy approval to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's efforts to acquire the assets of the Pittsburgh Press to allow the Post Gazette to resume publication as soon as possible.
"I support the efforts of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette to acquire the newspaper and hope that the federal regulating agencies are sensitive to the needs of the community so that Pittsburgh can have a newspaper," Specter said.
Neither the Post Gazette nor the Press has published since the strike by the Teamsters Union began on May 17, 1992.
Specter noted that the Justice Department must give its approval to the purchase under the provisions of the Hart-Scott Rodino Act.
"Time is of the essence in this matter and a speedy approval by Justice is essential if the elaborate details regarding the purchase are to be worked out and the Post Gazette can resume publication," he said.
"In my judgment, this is not a situation where Pittsburgh will be going from two newspapers to one, but rather where Pittsburgh will be going from no newspaper to one."
Specter has remained in close touch with the situation since the strike began. On July 27, he convened a meeting of top local officials, including Pittsburgh Mayor Masloff, Allegheny County Commission Chairman Toe Foerster, commissioners Pete Flaherty and Larry Dunn, City Council President Jack Wagner and others as part of a joint effort to urge the parties to resume negotiations to end the strike and to get the papers back on the street.
