In the emerging value-based healthcare system, data analytics will be not just important, but essential, for the leaders of patient care organizations, in order to not just survive, but thrive, under increasingly challenging reimbursement demands. This special report describes and analyzes a number of elements of this complex landscape, while also examining an entirely new era of health data, more broadly.

What are patient care organizations learning? Among other things, that the data contained in the electronic health record (EHR) provides vital information, but is only part of the picture, in risk-based contracting; and they are struggling to successfully "marry" clinical and claims data. The goal? To achieve a full, longitudinal view of the patient, across all care sites and environments. On the leading edge? Predictive analytics that can predict both readmissions and even initial hospitalizations.

Meanwhile, providers are beginning to capture and use social determinants of health data, and are in the very first steps of a journey to make use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, to support value-based healthcare delivery and operations.

Our editors hope that in this special report, readers can learn about the vast challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for industry leaders, as they forge ahead into a new world of health data.
