SPECIAL DEVICES INC. RECEIVES AUTHORIZATION FROM TRW
TO PRODUCE AND SHIP INITIATORS FOR AIRBAG SYSTEMS
NEWHALL, Calif., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Special Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: SDII) announced today that the Automotive Products Division has received authorization from TRW Inc. for production and shipment of initiators for use in TRW airbag systems supplied to General Motors Corp., with shipments scheduled to begin this week. John Cuthbert, president of the Automotive Products Division, stated that this authorization represents an important step by TRW toward fulfillment of its volume purchase obligation under a Master Purchase Agreement between the company and TRW. Cuthbert noted that the current schedule provides for shipment volumes to start out low and increase over the next eight to 12 weeks.
Cuthbert also announced that the company's Mesa, Ariz., plant has begun limited production of initiators with the first delivery scheduled to occur in April. Cuthbert noted that this represents the fulfillment of a significant requirement by the company under the Master Purchase Agreement with TRW. He also noted that production start-up, training and equipment shakedown will continue through at least the third fiscal quarter and that the Newhall plant will be fulfilling some of the TRW requirement until this process is complete.
Robert W. Benson, vice president of finance and chief financial officer, stated that the impact of the relative delay of shipments to TRW as compared to original expectation and the effect of the concurrent production start-up of the Mesa plant will result in earnings through the first half of the year that are estimated to be slightly lower than original expectations.
The company is a leader in the design and manufacture of highly reliable pyrotechnic devices used by the aerospace industry, primarily in tactical missile systems, and by the automotive industry as initiators in airbag systems.
