SPECIAL DEVICES INC. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS DIVISION
 RECEIVES TRW AUTHORIZATION
NEWHALL, Calif., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Special Devices Inc. (SDI) (NASDAQ: SDII) announced today that the Automotive Products Division received authorization from TRW and has shipped initiators which had been held in inventory since October 1991. Thomas F. Treinen, president, stated that this shipment to TRW is a significant event for the company in that these initiators represent the initial shipment for one of the high-volume programs with TRW. Treinen also noted that the company has been shipping small quantities to TRW for a low-volume program since November 1991.
Jack B. Watson, president of the Automotive Products Division, stated that this shipment demonstrates TRW is now implementing the procedures to make SDI a major supplier of initiators. He also stated he expects notification for continuing production and shipment needs from TRW in the near future with ramp up expected to occur through the second quarter. Although this is very good news for the company, it is occurring three to six months later than originally anticipated. Watson commented that the slippage was not due to any underlying problems or lack of commitment to the program by TRW.
Robert W. Benson, vice president, Finance, and chief financial officer, stated that the slippage in the TRW production and shipping timing will negatively affect the first-quarter earnings as compared to original expectations, however results for the first quarter are estimated to be approximately the same as the first quarter of 1991.
Watson also announced that, effective Jan. 20, he is voluntarily stepping down as president of the Automotive Products Division. He will continue to serve as a member of the board of directors and will be an active employee on a reduced-time basis so that he will be able to concentrate on forward strategic planning, new product development and integration of the Mesa, Ariz., plant production while removing himself from daily operational matters. John M. Cuthbert, vice president, has been appointed presidet of the Automotive Products Division. Cuthbert has the full and enthusiastic support of SDI management due to his extensive experience in the airbag industry, personal rapport with customers, excellent leadership qualities and strong technical background.
The company is a leader in the design and manufacture of highly reliable pyrotechnic devices used by the aerospace industry, primarily in tactical missile systems, and by the automotive industry as initiators in airbag systems.
