SPECIAL CARE, OTHER LOW-INCOME BLUE CROSS CUSTOMERS MAY QUALIFY FOR EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania (BCWP) is notifying its customers of their potential eligibility for a tax credit or refund through "Earned Income Credits" when filing their 1992 federal income tax return.
An earned income credit applies to lower-income workers with one or more children who live with them. The credit reduces the amount of tax due or, if tax is not due, can qualify the person for a refund.
"Because Blue Cross offers a number of products at reduced premium to low-income families, we wanted our customers to be aware of this opportunity," said Mary Ann Guzzardi, product manager. "Special Care, for example, offers low-cost basic health care benefits to persons with incomes ranging from $12,000 to $24,000. Customers in our Preferred Reduced program and other product lines also may qualify," added Guzzardi.
To qualify for the "Health Insurance Earned Income Credit," a person must have worked and earned less than $22,370 in 1992 and paid insurance premiums for at least one qualifying child living in the household.
To qualify, a child must meet all of the following criteria: be related by birth or adoption or be an eligible foster child; be under age 19, under age 24 if a full-time student, or any age if fully disabled; live in the main home in the United States for more than six months of the year or 12 months if a foster child.
BCWP has sent information to its Special Care customers, including the total amount of premium paid in 1992. "We believe that most of the customers who qualify will be in the Special Care program," said Guzzardi.
General questions concerning these and other earned income credits should be directed to the Internal Revenue Service, 800-829-3676.
