SPACE SYSTEMS/LORAL AND TRIMBLE JOIN TO BUILD GPS ATTITUDE RECEIVER

 SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Space Systems/Loral and Trimble Navigation (NASDAQ: TRMB) jointly announced today an exclusive licensing agreement to develop a space flight qualified Global Positioning System (GPS) three dimensional attitude (pitch, yaw and roll) determination unit, the GPS Tensor(TM). "The special qualifications to develop space-hardened electronics exist at Loral, while GPS expertise is at Trimble," said Charles Trimble, chief executive officer and president of Trimble Navigation. "This license agreement uses the best talents of both companies to attack a new market, spacecraft attitude determination using GPS."
 The GPS attitude determination technology was developed by Trimble in collaboration with Stanford University researchers. The technology is a spin-off from NASA's Gravity Probe B program, implemented by Stanford University. The Trimble low-power all solid-state sensor uses precise centimeter-level measurements of the GPS signal to accurately resolve orientation of a space vehicle in real-time. The space-borne design is based on the very successful Trimble Advanced Navigation Sensor (TANS) design that uses the same technology as the Trimble hand-held units used in Operation Desert Storm. In many applications, combined attitude determination and navigation through GPS can supplement or replace inertial guidance systems. A key advantage is that GPS is not subject to long-term drift associated with inertial systems.
 Along with spacecraft attitude, the new system is capable of providing GPS position, velocity and time for ephemeris determination and time transfer using low-weight, low-power and low-cost hardware. Trimble also markets a vehicle attitude measuring receiver for land and maritime use called TANS Vector.
