SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOR LAUNCHES FIRST PRIVATELY-FINANCED SPACE RESEARCH LAB

 /ADVANCE/ CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- America's space program opened another chapter in its history today when the Space Shuttle Endeavor launched the first privately financed space research laboratory into orbit.
 Work performed inside the Spacehab Laboratory may lead to breakthroughs in medicine, biotechnology, computers and telecommunications. The laboratory fits in the forward end of the shuttle cargo bay.
 The laboratory is designed to accommodate two mission specialists and room for 50 micro-gravity experiments for medical and industrial research.
 The research being performed this week in space and in subsequent Spacehab missions may lead to the development of new drugs for the treatment of diseases, such as AIDS and certain forms of cancer.
 Thirteen of the 22 major experiments being performed inside the Spacehab Laboratory this week are sponsored by 33 American companies who are developing new products and industrial processes that may revolutionize several high-technology industries in the coming decades.
 Spacehab Laboratories are built by McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Division, under contract by the Virginia-based firm Spacehab, the inventors of the Space Laboratories.
