SPACE CENTER HOUSTON OPENS WITH DU PONT SUPPORTING GRANT
HOUSTON, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Space Center Houston was described today as "the newest jewel in the national crown of science education" by an executive of Du Pont (NYSE: DD), a major corporate sponsor of the $70 million visitors center, which opens to the public Friday.
"Many of the 2 million visitors to Space Center Houston each year will be school students who will be able to relate their math and science studies to the wonders of space exploration and travel," said Stacey J. Mobley, Du Pont senior vice president for External Affairs.
The new visitors center is adjacent to NASA's Johnson Space Center, the home of mission control and the site where astronauts train. A project of the non-profit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, Inc., it is operated in part by corporate donations.
Du Pont's $1.8 million contribution will support operation of the center's Starship Gallery, housing the Skylab module; one of the world's most important collections of space artifacts from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs; and the largest public display of moon rocks. The Du Pont grants also will support Destiny Theater, where audiences will view the 70mm-format film "On Human Destiny," culled from more than 6 million feet of historic NASA footage.
In further support of the educational value of Space Center Houston, Du Pont plans to reward the top six winners of its seventh annual Du Pont Challenge Science Essay Awards Program with an all-expenses-paid VIP trip to the center next year.
Du Pont sells about $1 billion in products and services to the aerospace industry annually, including advanced electronic and imaging systems, chemicals and fuels, polymers and advanced materials systems including fibers and composites.
