DUAL-MODE CELLULAR PHONES FOR DIGITAL PROGRAM IN DALLAS
DALLAS, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems announced today that Ericsson GE will be one of the providers of Cellular phone equipment for an upcoming digital verification program in Dallas scheduled to begin in March 1992.
Initially, Ericsson GE will provide Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems with 50 dual-mode cellular phones to be used in the TDMA (time division multiple access) digital program. The phones will consist of in-car and portable cellular telephones. Eventually, the program will be expanded to include approximately 500 Dallas customers.
"Ericsson is one of the first companies to develop and provide a small, lightweight, dual-mode portable cellular phone," said Tim Maretti, general manager for Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems in Dallas. "Our Dallas customers will be among the first anywhere to experience the convenience and quality of portable phones using digital service."
Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems was the first cellular company in the United States to announce its plans to deploy digital cellular service. In addition to Dallas, Mobile Systems plans to introduce TDMA digital in Chicago, Washington, Baltimore and Boston during 1992.
"This will be one of the cellular industry's first large-scale applications of digital cellular service," Maretti said. "With the magnitude of this program, we'll be able to fine tune the technology before digital cellular is launched on a full-scale commercial basis. The result will be a smooth transition for customers."
Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems provides service to more than 870,000 customers in 28 metropolitan markets in the United States. Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems' service areas, including those pending regulatory approval, represent 35.6 million potential customers. The company is a subsidiary of Southwestern Bell Corp. (NYSE: SBC).
