 SOUTHWESTERN BELL ANNOUNCES LABORATORY TRIAL
 USING SIEMENS STROMBERG-CARLSON MAN SYSTEM
ST. LOUIS, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwestern Bell Technology Resources, Inc., a subsidiary of Southwestern Bell Corporation, will begin a laboratory trial of Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) using Siemens Stromberg-Carlson's EWSM Cell Switching Systems.
The trial, which will begin in June, will take place at Technology Resources' laboratory facilities in St. Louis, and will test LAN to LAN (Local Area Network) connectivity across a MAN network. Siemens Stromberg-Carlson's EWSM Cell Switching Systems will be located in two of Southwestern Bell's labs located approximately 20 miles apart. These switching systems will be interconnected using Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) transmission facilities.
According to Jeff Storey, member of technical staff with Technology Resources, "The MAN testbed will be used to explore emerging customer applications, determine operational issues associated with new network services and evaluate the network interfaces provided by the MAN system. Additionally, we plan to use the results from the detailed analysis of the network's performance to determine the optimal network architecture."
Technology Resources also plans to use the MAN testbed as a platform for further research of customer applications such as medical imaging, video conferencing, SMDS, Frame Relay and LAN interconnection.
"With the EWSM system, carriers can deliver high speed data connectivity applications at rates up to 140 Mbps today," said Eve Aretakis, director Product Line Management, Switching at Siemens Stromberg-Carlson. "The EWSM Cell Switching System operates over fiber and offers a migration path from today's narrow and wideband services to broadband ATM."
MAN systems, based on IEEE 802.6 standard, have the ability to provide transparent interconnections among LANs, enabling carriers to offer high-speed data transmission service, over the public network.
