SOUTHWEST DETROIT HOSPITAL TRUSTEE ISSUES STATEMENT

SOUTHWEST DETROIT HOSPITAL TRUSTEE ISSUES STATEMENT
DETROIT, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The following remarks were made by

William G. Anderson, D.O., court-appointed trustee for Southwest Detroit Hospital (SDH):
As the Bankruptcy Court-appointed trustee for Southwest Detroit Hospital, it has become my unfortunate duty to place on notice this community, the hospital employees, the professional staff, our elected officials, social, religious and civic leaders -- unless immediate relief is obtained in the form of an infusion of operating capital, SDH may not be able to continue to provide health care needed for this community.
It saddens me to announce on this date and at this hour -- 28 years after the assassination of one of this century's greatest leaders who dared to worry about the plight of the poor -- who sought to address the social needs of our people -- that we are faced with another assassination -- not being able to provide health care for those in greatest need.
SDH is plagued with enormous debt, inability to meet payroll for its dedicated employees; under-funded malpractice insurance trust; cessation of interim payments from Medicaid, Medicare and Blue Cross, eroding staff, deteriorating building and equipment -- all of which require immediate attention.
Wayne County, through the office of the executive and the managed care program, has been exceptional in its support of the continuation of SDH. The mayor has committed the resources of the city to support this effort.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield, to their credit, is considering re- establishment of a relationship with the hospital that would provide some cash flow.
Medicaid and Medicare have refused to consider a request for any infusion of cash and restart of interim payments.
The Detroit Medical Society is committed to the support of SDH and has encouraged all of its members to join the hospital staff, if they are not already members, and admit patients for care.
