 SOUTHWEST AIRLINES REPORTS OCTOBER TRAFFIC
DALLAS, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV)

announced today that its October 1991 traffic increased 21.9 percent to 1,006.0 million revenue passenger miles (RPMs) from the 1990 level of 825.4 million RPMs. Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 15.0 percent to 1,655.8 million from the October 1990 level of 1,439.6 million. The load factor for the month was 60.8 percent, up 3.5 points from last year's load factor of 57.3 percent.
Herbert D. Kelleher, chairman of the board and CEO stated: "We are very pleased with our October traffic results, a 60.8 percent load factor versus last year's relatively weak 57.3 percent. Importantly, we are continuing to see revenue growth exceeding capacity growth in addition to our improving traffic situation. November and December bookings imply continued favorable load factor comparisons. Still, our revenues are falling below levels necessary to achieve acceptable margins given the increasing cost pressures stemming from fuel and maintenance. We continue to experience sluggish demand in most markets without substantial promotional support."
For the first ten months of 1991, Southwest flew 9,378.6 million RPMs, compared with 8,389.7 million RPMs recorded for the same period in 1990, an increase of 11.8 percent. Available seat miles increased 12.5 percent to 15,371.5 million from the 1990 year-to-date level of 13,660.9 million. The 1991 year-to-date load factor was 61.0 percent, compared to 61.4 percent for the same period last year, a decrease of 0.4 points.
