SOUTHWEST AIRLINES REPORTS NOVEMBER TRAFFIC DALLAS, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwest Airlines Co. announced
today that its November 1991 traffic increased 16.2 percent to 948.3 million revenue passenger miles (RPMs) from the 1990 level of 816.2 million RPMs. Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 12.3 percent to 1,560.1 million from the November 1990 level of 1,389.7 million. The load factor for the month was 60.8 percent, up 2.1 points from last year's load factor of 58.7 percent.
Herbert D. Kelleher, chairman of the board and president, stated: "We are pleased with our overall November traffic performance but somewhat disappointed with our overall revenue results. Unlike recent months, but similar to the first seven months of the year, our November revenue growth did not keep pace with our capacity growth, resulting in a decline in the operating revenue yield per available seat mile as compared to November 1990. The demand for business travel appears to have weakened as compared to September and October, resulting in softer yields per revenue passenger mile. With the exception of markets where competitors have reduced or ceased service, load factors in individual city-pair markets were generally down as compared to last year. "Our December bookings look very strong, however, and we are hopeful of strong load factor comparisons for the month as compared to last year's depressed December traffic results. "Given the continued sluggish economic and revenue environment, we are not enthused about our prospective near-term profitability levels. We continue to expect to be modestly profitable for fourth quarter 1991, but our fourth quarter results will certainly come in below desired levels and also below either second or third quarter 1991 results." For the first 11 months of 1991, Southwest flew 10,326.9 million RPMs, compared with 9,205.9 million RPMs recorded for the same period in 1990, an increase of 12.2. percent. Available seat miles increased 12.5 percent to 16,931.6 million from the 1990 year-to-date level of 15,050.5 million. The 1991 year-to-date load factor was 61.0 percent, compared to 61.2 percent for the same period last year, a decrease of .2 points. SOUTHWEST AIRLINES CO.
