SOUTHWEST AIRLINES INAUGURATES SERVICE FROM LOUISVILLE

LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) celebrated its new service from Louisville's Standiford Field today with a tailgate party thrown in typical Southwest style. Mayor Jerry Abramson and County Judge David L. Armstrong joined Southwest's director of marketing and sales Dave Ridley for the festivities.
The carrier inaugurated six daily nonstop roundtrip flights to Chicago's convenient Midway Airport, four daily nonstop roundtrip flights to St. Louis, and one daily nonstop roundtrip flight to Birmingham.
To celebrate the event and highlight its $49 one-way unrestricted fares to the three cities, Southwest treated 49 elementary children to a day in Chicago, to include a visit to Comiskey Park. The festivities in the Airside Rotunda of Standiford Field surrounded the departure of flight No. 1517 at 10 a.m. to Chicago.
"The 49 children are from the Portland Little League and most of them have never flown before," said Dave Ridley, director of marketing and sales. "We're thrilled to give these inner-city children an opportunity to take a trip that promises to be filled with fun."
The $49 one-way fare between Louisville, Chicago's Midway Airport, St. Louis, and Birmingham is unrestricted and available for all seats during peak hours, Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. An even lower unrestricted one-way fare of $39 is available for all seats during off-peak hours, Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., and weekends.
Louisville travelers can experience even greater savings by combining these fares with Southwest's "Friends Fly Free" offer. This flexible and convenient promotion allows a Customer who makes reservations and purchases a full fare ticket to take a friend along for free.
"Southwest has a history of bringing low fares and frequent flights into a city," said Ridley. "We're delighted to bring quality air service to Louisville at such substantial savings."
Louisville is the 35th city served by Southwest Airlines. The carrier will inaugurate service to San Jose, Calif. on June 1, 1993 with six flights to Burbank and five flights to Las Vegas.
Southwest Airlines is the first and only major airline to capture the industry's "Triple Crown" for its 1992 performance, based on statistics published in Department of Transportation (DOT) Air Travel Consumer Reports. The "Triple Crown" consists of the best ontime performance, best baggage handling record, and fewest Customer complaints of all major carriers. Southwest operates nearly 1,400 flights a day with an all-jet fleet of 149 Boeing 737s.
