SOUTHWEST AIRLINES CAPTURES TOP PERFORMANCE RANKINGS FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE MONTH

DALLAS, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- For the fourth month in a row, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) has placed first in all three performance categories of the Department of Transportation (DOT) Air Travel Consumer Report for its October 1993 performance. The Dallas-based airline has swept the top position five times this year, bringing to 16 the number of times the airline has won the "Triple Crown."
A "Triple Crown" consists of the best ontime performance, fewest reports of mishandled baggage, and fewest Customer complaints of all carriers for which statistics are reported in all categories of the report. Southwest is the only major airline that has ever won the "Triple Crown."
In October, Southwest had 90.2 percent of its 1,500 daily flights arrive on time. The industry average for ontime performance was 83.0 percent. The airline had only 3.54 reports of mishandled baggage received for every 1,000 Southwest Customers; and for every 100,000 Customers flying on Southwest in October, only .17 filed complaints with the DOT.
"Our employees are very determined to end 1993 on a high note by providing 'positively outrageous Customer Service' in order to add another annual 'Triple Crown' to their outstanding list of achievements," said Colleen Barrett, Southwest's executive vice president-Customers and corporate secretary. "They've found the rhythm of providing the friendliest and most spirited service in the industry and have proved it's a winning formula with this fourth consecutive 'Triple Crown.'"
Southwest is also the first and only major airline to capture an annual "Triple Crown," which it earned for its 1992 performance. Southwest operates an all-jet fleet of 157 Boeing 737s.
