SOUTHWEST AIRLINES CAPTURES ANOTHER TRIPLE CROWN WITH A RECORD ONTIME PERFORMANCE

DALLAS, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) has done it again for the second time this year. The Dallas-based airline has swept the top position in all three categories of the Department of Transportation (DOT) Air Travel Consumer Report for July 1993 performance, thus capturing the "Triple Crown" an astounding 13 times.
A "Triple Crown" consists of the best ontime performance, fewest reports of midhandled baggage, and fewest customer complaints of all carriers for which statistics are reported in all categories of the report. Southwest received "Triple Crown" honors seven times last year -- while no other major carriers has ever laid claim to the "Triple Crown" once.
Southwest had 95.4 percent of its nearly 1,500 daily flights arrive on time in July, which is the best ontime record since the government began keeping track almost six years ago. There were only 3.53 reports of mishandled baggage received for every 1,000 Southwest customers; and for every 100,000 customers flying on Southwest in July, only .17 filed customer complaints with the DOT.
"This is a remarkable achievement, but is something we have come to expect from our outstanding Employees," said Colleen Barrett, executive vice president - customers and corporate secretary of Southwest. "By capturing yet another 'Triple Crown' our employees continue to demonstrate Southwest's emphasis on being one of the best major airlines in the country."
Southwest is the first and only major airline to capture an annual "Triple Crown," which it earned for its 1992 performance. Southwest operates an all-jet fleet of 155 Boeing 737s.
