SOUTHFIELD REHABILITATION HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES NEW OWNER AND NAME

SOUTHFIELD REHABILITATION HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES NEW OWNER AND NAME
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Southfield Rehabilitation Hospital will be known as Great Lakes Regional Rehabilitation Hospital as a result of the closing and purchase of all stock from its parent, National Rehabilitation Corporation, by Rehabilitation Hospital Corporation of America (RHCA).
The announcement was made today by Michael L. Sandnes, RHCA director of operations. Neither the purchase nor terms were disclosed by RHCA, according to Sandnes.
The Great Lakes Regional Rehabilitation Hospital is a specialty rehabilitation hospital in Oakland County which offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical rehabilitation programs and services to patients recovering from strokes, spinal cord injuries, fractures, amputations and head injuries. The hospital, open since 1987, has 150 nurses, physical, occupational, speech and other licensed therapists, pharmacists and various support personnel. Great Lakes Regional Rehabilitation Hospital has 75 licensed rehabilitation hospital beds and 26 nursing home beds.
Great Lakes Regional Rehabilitation Hospital is fully licensed by the Michigan Department of Public Health and certified to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs by the U.S. Health Care Financing Administration. It is accredited as a rehabilitation hospital by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Sandnes indicated the hospital also plans to add to that specialty hospital accreditation from the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO).
RHCA estimates it will spend $500,000 in the first 12 to 18 months for renovations, with a master capital expenditure plan to guide more than $2 million earmarked by RHCA to be invested in improvements to the hospital over the next three years.
"We are renewing the commitment of Great Lakes Regional Rehabilitation Hospital to quality health care," Sandnes said. "RHCA is planning to invest the capital necessary to assist this facility in surpassing its maximum service potential."
"RHCA's purchase of the facility means we can continue our efforts to strengthen the capabilities of our staff and continuously improve the care of patients with special needs in the Metro Detroit area," said Dr. Saul Weingarden, MD, medical director of the Great Lakes Regional Rehabilitation Hospital. "From a caregiver's position, it is tremendously gratifying to know these patients are receiving the highest level of care to provide them with the tools and skills to live the fullest lives possible."
RHCA, created last July with investment support from Foster Management Company of New York, is the nation's leading investor in rehabilitation companies. It had estimated 1991 revenues of $20 million from its two rehabilitation hospitals in West Virginia. RHCA is building two additional hospitals in Richmond, Va., and Salisbury, Md., scheduled to open in May 1992 and February 1993, respectively. The addition of Great Lakes Regional Rehabilitation Hospital will bring RHCA's total hospital beds to more than 250 and employees to more than 900. The company, which is privately owned, is headquartered near Philadelphia.
Great Lakes Regional Rehabilitation Hospital will continue to improve its successful operation with the addition of treatment resources and expansion of rehabilitation programs.
