/NOTE: Erte died in 1990. The following commentary was written in 1983. The years between then and his death were productive, as he created some of his finest works within the last decade.
THE ENERGY ... THE ENTHUSIASM ... THE TALENTS OF ERTE ...
Erte, as a major influence in design and art, can best be described by the following:
"First, his aesthetic message is wonderfully suited to the medium of graphics. The artist's love of blazing color, his taste for the exotic and the erotically tinged, his romanticism and wit, and his lyrical, flowing visions of the human figure, all find expression through the rich, deep inks and bold, yet elegant, lines that serigraphy and lithography make possible.
"Second, the artist's way of working is especially appropriate for the print medium. Erte characteristically begins by drawing a hard, immaculately refined line to define his images and major details. He then proceeds to fill in his colors, using tints and hues that are clear and flat. Colors are frequently juxtaposed so that there are almost mathematically progressive graduations. Anyone who understands how masters (the base drawings from which the printing plates and screens are made) are created in serigraphy and lithography can see why Erte's method and his technical skills adapt as well as they do to printmaking.
"Third, Erte is an innovator, an artist who is not afraid to explore the unexplored. In creating prints, he frequently experiments with new techniques and unusual combinations to achieve striking effects. Sometimes he combines two or more printing processes in one print (for example, lithography and serigraphy for the Alphabet portfolio), or he utilizes flocking over serigraph inks (The Curtain), or employs gold and silver metallic hot-stamping and blind embossing in combination with serigraphy (Samson and Delilah). These explorations have generally succeeded admirably.
"Fourth, and most important, people of every shade of sophistication in art fall in love with Erte's graphics.
"Erte asserts (rightfully) that his art transcends Art Deco, even though he was at the center of this important art movement of the 1920s. Art Deco artists and craftsmen sought to create art and objects expressive of their time, which meant an acceptance of speed and intensity, a break with the floral forms of Art Nouveau, and a passion for luxurious materials and superb workmanship. The roots of Art Deco were in geometric motifs, luxuriant colors, and graceful curvilinear, feminine lines. Art Deco was the first comprehensive style to make 'modernism' in art widely popular.
"Erte's meticulous, luxurious, superbly crafted graphics succeed so well to some extent because they re-establish many of the significant attributes of classical Art Deco -- that magical fusion of sleek design, exquisite materials, and superb craftsmanship. But Erte's graphics are timeless; they are an art that can be appreciated as much today as they would have been in the twenties, and will be appreciated by connoisseurs of future generations."
