SOUTHERN STATES UTILITIES WINS GOVERNOR'S CONSERVATION AWARD

ORLANDO, Fla., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern States Utilities, Inc. (SSU) won first place in the governor's environmental education competition for the company's water conservation public education program. The award, presented personally to an SSU representative by Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles, was sponsored by the Environmental Education Foundation of Florida, Inc.
SSU's "water conservation program" is comprehensive, consisting of a speakers' bureau for adult and children presentations, open houses, conservation kits, SSU/4H Environmental Landscape Management grants, newsletters, brochures, advertising, articles, educational videos and legislative activities. The program is designed to continuously educate and enhance over a million and a half water consumers (well over SSU's own customer base) on the critical need to protect and conserve Florida's precious water resources.
"SSU fully supports Florida's long-term water management policy of water conservation and reuse of reclaimed water to preserve the state's dwindling fresh water supply," said SSU spokesperson Lisa Spinazzola Irven, who runs the company's water conservation education program. "Clearly SSU has an extensive program in place, but we are continually looking to do more. The company has more than doubled in size in the last three years requiring an enormous commitment of funds to expand and modify our water plants to assure strict compliance with Florida's environmental laws. Despite this capital investment, SSU has demonstrated its dedication to water conservation and saving Florida's water supplies by allocating significant financial and personnel resources to conservation education. We are extremely pleased to be recognized for our efforts."
Previously, SSU's program received first place in the Education Category of the 1992 First Annual Florida Xeriscape Awards Program, sponsored by the Southwest Florida, South Florida and St. Johns River Water Management Districts and the American Society of Landscape Architects; and Image Award in the Public Service Category of the 1992 Central Florida Image Awards, sponsored by the Central Florida Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association, as well as second place in the 1991 Innovative Water Conservation Competition, sponsored by the Florida section of the American Water Works Association.
SSU is the largest investor-owned water and wastewater utility in the state of Florida. SSU operates more than 150 water systems serving 160,000 customers within 26 Florida counties.
