SOUTHERN NUCLEAR NAMES VICE PRESIDENT AND CORPORATE COUNSEL

 BIRMINGHAM, Ala., April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Nuclear Operating Company's board of directors has named James H. Miller III to be vice president and corporate counsel, effective May 1. He also will be responsible for Southern Nuclear's governmental affairs function.
 Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of The Southern Company (NYSE: SO), was established in 1990 to provide services and to undertake the management and operation of the three nuclear plants within The Southern Company's electric system. Other subsidiaries include Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power, Savannah Electric, Southern Company Services and Southern Electric International.
 A native of Mobile, Ala., Miller received a bachelor's degree in marketing in 1971 from the University of Alabama. After serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy, he attended the University of Alabama's law school, receiving a law degree in 1977. Miller is a member of the Birmingham, Alabama and American Bar Associations, the federal energy bar, and the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the Edison Electric Institute's legal committee and the Nuclear Energy Institute lawyers committee.
 Before joining Southern Nuclear, Miller was a partner in the Balch & Bingham law firm and worked principally in the fields of nuclear power and electric energy law. Since 1991, Miller has also served as a municipal court judge for the city of Mountain Brook, Ala.
 Miller and his wife, Kathy, live in Birmingham with their four daughters Kate, Grace, Juju and Libba.
