 $100 MILLION OF 8-5/8 PERCENT NOTES DUE MAY 1, 2002
 BIRMINGHAM, Ala., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Natural Gas Company announced the public offering today of $100 million of its 8-5/8 percent Notes due May 1, 2002, at 100 percent to yield 8-5/8 percent. The offering is being made through Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Merrill Lynch & Co., as underwriters.
 The Notes are not redeemable prior to maturity and are not subject to a sinking fund.
 Southern Natural Gas Company, a Birmingham, Ala.-based subsidiary of Sonat Inc. (NYSE: SNT), operates an 8,600-mile natural gas pipeline system serving the Southeast. Sonat, also headquartered in Birmingham, is a worldwide energy company involved in natural gas transmission and marketing, oil and gas exploration and production, and oil services.
