 SOUTHERN NATURAL GAS COMPANY OFFERS $100 MILLION
 OF 7.85 PERCENT NOTES DUE JAN. 15, 2002
 BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Natural Gas Company announced the public offering today of $100 million of its 7.85 percent Notes due Jan. 15, 2002, at 99.881 percent to yield 7.867 percent. The offering is being made through Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Merrill Lynch & Co., as underwriters.
 The net proceeds from the sale of the Notes will be used, together with funds provided from the company's operations, for redemption of Southern Natural's 10 percent Notes due Dec. 31, 1995.
 The Notes are not redeemable prior to maturity and are not subject to a sinking fund.
 Southern Natural Gas Company, a Birmingham, Ala.-based subsidiary of Sonat Inc., (NYSE: SNT) operates an 8,600-mile natural gas pipeline system serving the Southeast. Sonat, also headquartered in Birmingham, is a worldwide energy company involved in natural gas transmission and marketing, oil and gas exploration and production, and oil services.
