SOUTHERN NATURAL ANNOUNCES RATE INCREASE

 SOUTHERN NATURAL
 ANNOUNCES RATE INCREASE
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Natural Gas Company, a unit of Sonat Inc. (NYSE: SNT), today announced that it has made a filing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to increase its sales and transportation rates by approximately $57 million annually. The filing is expected to become effective May 1, 1993, after the required one-month notice period and five-month suspension period normally imposed by the FERC.
Southern Natural stated that its rate change filing is designed to recover increased operational costs incurred by it in providing sales and transportation service and to reflect the impact of competition on both its level and mix of services. The filing, which reflects an approximate 4 percent increase in its non-gas cost of service, will be implemented in conjunction with Southern Natural's proposed restructuring of its jurisdictional services in compliance with industrywide initiatives commenced earlier this year by the FERC in its Order No. 636. For this purpose, Southern Natural has submitted both pre-restructuring and post-restructuring rates in its filing.
Southern Natural, headquartered in Birmingham, operates an 8,600- mile natural gas pipeline network serving seven southeastern states. It is a subsidiary of Sonat Inc., also headquartered in Birmingham. Sonat is a worldwide energy company involved in natural gas transmission and marketing, oil and gas exploration and production, and offshore drilling.
